The Crossroads of Luxury Fashion and Global Design

Top fashion brands in today’s industry are powerhouses in all that they do, creating brand names so strong they can slap a logo onto a plastic bag and sell it for multiple times its price. But even when designing a plastic bag, these luxury fashion brands adhere to the highest standards in the industry in order to maintain their brand integrity.

It’s no wonder these luxury fashion brands have expanded their reach from fashion to lifestyle products and have become leaders in the world of design. Many of the world’s top fashion brands have even exhibited at such prestigious design events such as Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile.

Here are some of the most prominent fashion brands and their outstanding contributions to the world of lifestyle and design:

COS

Known for their instagram worthy installations, this year’s COS exhibit at Milan Design Week was no different. In collaboration with Phillip K. Smith III, they created an installation named Open Sky that uses mirrors to play with the light and reflections within the 16th century Milanese building where the installation was located. Using mirrors allows the visitor to gain a unique experience because what you see depends highly on the time of day and specifics of the sky at the moment you visit.

The Swedish fashion brand is no stranger to crowd-pleasing installations. In the past, New Spring, their collaboration with Studio Swine to create exploding mist blossoms was a fully immersive, sensory experience that visitors reveled in.

Louis Vuitton

With designers Humberto & Fernando Campana, Atelier Oï, Patricia Urquiola and Marcel Wanders, Louis Vuitton created an impressive setup for their Les Petits Nomades and Objets Nomades collections. They showcased an elegant, creative and poetic line of decor objects drawing from their signature refined style, but also featuring the unique viewpoint of each renowned designer with whom they worked.

Originally launched in 2012, Objets Nomades is a limited-edition collection of travel objects that pays homage to the special-order heritage of the House. Each object created is a unique encounter between the world-renowned designers they work with and Louis Vuitton’s creative artisans. Combining their versatility and resourcefulness creates an imaginative interpretation of the concept of travel.

Bottega Veneta

At this year’s Milan Design Week Bottega Veneta’s creative director, Tomas Maier, displayed a calm and elegant show drawing from the brand’s iconic woven design and neutral color palette. The collection was a collaboration with Italian designer Osanna Visconti di Modrone and featured lights, chairs and homewares.

However, this wasn’t the first time Bottega Veneta wowed crowds with their concept of artful living in the world of fashion. At their Fall/Winter 2018 New York Fashion Week show, Tomas Maier merged the worlds of fashion and lifestyle by calling on Tony award–winning set designer Scott Pask to create a runway that emulates the interior of a rich-hued and embellished yet livable home. This way, the models walking down the runway looked as if they were genuinely living in these clothes.

Hermes

As always, the Hermes collections launched during Salone del Mobile are impressive. This year’s “All About Color” exhibition is no different. Directed by the bran’s artistic director Charlotte Macaux Perelman and curated by Alexis Fabry, Hermes displayed tiled exteriors and interiors with a geometric, yet softly colored and poetic theme.

The 15,000 zellige tiles were created by specialists Mosaic del Sur and acted as the perfect backdrop to display their new accessories, textiles and wallpaper collections. It’s no wonder their exhibit was one of the greatest hits of this year’s Salone del Mobile. The powerhouse has been creating lifestyle pieces since as far back as 1922. Today, eighty years later, they boast a complete home line of coordinated bed and bath linens, furniture, silverware, crystal and porcelain, office accessories and even baby gifts.
