“I decided to start anew,” artist Georgia O’Keeffe wrote to a friend in 1915, “to strip away what I had been taught—to accept as true my own thinking.” ⁠ ⁠ These words from O’Keeffe encapsulate her desires to transition from the naturalistic mode of representation she had been educated in, towards the extreme close-up abstractions in her paintings that she would become known for. ⁠ ⁠ This transition towards a new style is clear in her painting "Abstraction Blue" (1927), in which undulating swirls and curves of blue tones emanating from the lower half of the canvas, bisected by a lighter crevice of paint that cuts the canvas vertically. Its design utilizes a fully-glass exterior to reflect the surrounding buildings and East River, and a bubble-like cubic design with several winding forms inside that create purposeful voids. The name "Sarcostyle" means "one of many contractile filaments that make up a striated muscle fiber." The blue line-platform, quite literally “the blue platform” was designed by artist Per Olof Ultvedt. Local art guide Marie Andersson theorizes that Per Olof Ultvedt not only chose the blue shades based on their aesthetic values but also their relaxing effect.⁠ ⁠ "I think Per Olof Ultvedt wanted to create a calming atmosphere because this is a station where people are in a hurry. They are changing trains to another metro line or another commuter train.
